Its main function is to change the voltage level of an alternating current (AC) supply, either increasing it (step-up) or decreasing it (step-down), while keeping the power (minus small losses) nearly constant.

Basic Principle

Transformers operate on Faraday's Law of Induction. A time-varying current in the primary winding creates a changing magnetic flux in the iron core, which induces a voltage in the secondary winding. The ratio of the primary voltage (\(V_p\)) to the secondary voltage (\(V_s\)) is directly proportional to the ratio of the number of turns in their coils (\(N_p\) and \(N_s\)).

Transformer Types

Transformers can be classified in several ways. The most common classifications are based on function, application, and cooling method.

1. Classification by Function
Step-up Transformers: Increase voltage from primary to secondary (more turns in the secondary). Used at power stations to boost generator voltage for efficient long-distance transmission.
Step-down Transformers: Decrease voltage from primary to secondary (fewer turns in the secondary). Used at substations to lower transmission voltage for distribution, and in countless devices to supply safe, low voltage for electronics.
Isolation Transformers: Have a 1:1 turns ratio. They do not change voltage but provide electrical isolation between circuits for safety, breaking ground loops and protecting against faults.

2. Classification by Application
Power Transformers: The largest type, used in transmission networks at high voltages (33 kV and above) to handle bulk power. They are designed for maximum efficiency at or near full load.
Distribution Transformers: Used in the final stage of the power grid to step down voltage from distribution lines (e.g., 11 kV) to the level used by consumers (e.g., 230 V). They are designed for high efficiency across a variable load, as they operate 24/7.
Instrument Transformers: Used for measurement and protection, they safely scale down high currents and voltages to standardized, safe levels for meters and relays.
Current Transformers (CTs): Produce a secondary current proportional to the primary current (e.g., 5 A or 1 A).
Potential Transformers (PTs/VTs): Produce a secondary voltage proportional to the primary voltage (e.g., 120 V or 110 V).
Autotransformers: Use a single, continuous winding with taps along its length for voltage adjustment. They are more compact and economical than two-winding transformers but do not provide electrical isolation.

3. Classification by Core & Cooling
Core-Type vs. Shell-Type: In a core-type transformer, the windings surround the core; in a shell-type, the core surrounds the windings. Shell-type provides better mechanical support and lower leakage flux.

Oil-Immersed Transformers: The core and windings are submerged in mineral oil, which provides both insulation and cooling. Common in utility and high-power applications due to their high efficiency and overload tolerance.
Dry-Type Transformers: Use air for cooling and solid insulation (like epoxy resin). They are safer for indoor use (e.g., in buildings, hospitals, and offshore platforms) due to lower fire risk.

Transformers are essential components in virtually every part of the electrical grid and in most electronic devices.

Power Transmission: They step up generator voltage for long-distance transmission over high-voltage lines, significantly reducing energy loss as heat (since power loss \(I^2R\) is minimized by reducing current). They then step it down for safe use in homes and businesses.
Consumer Electronics: Used as power supplies to reduce mains voltage to the low-voltage DC required by devices like laptops, phone chargers, and televisions.

Industrial & Commercial: Distribution transformers provide power for factories and office buildings. Control power transformers supply low voltage for relays and control circuits in industrial equipment.
Measurement and Safety: Instrument transformers allow for the safe monitoring and control of high-power systems. Isolation transformers protect sensitive equipment and users from electrical shock.
